Ritornello

The developmental process for this exhibition took place during a residency at the Anderson Ranch in Colorado earlier this year. I went there specifically to elevate my work to a next level by borrowing from the deep resources of musicology and composition. At the ranch I spent ten weeks working intensively to establish some useful underlying principles when translating musical structures into three dimensional form.

For their generosity and support, I have named the first piece in honour of the people I met at the Anderson Ranch. I also express my gratitude to the people of Western Australia for a Creative Development Fellowship provided through the Department for Culture and the Arts.

My intent for the work in this exhibition is to move from single autonomous artworks to those that extend the experience for the viewer into time. Viewing the work over an extended period by travelling along and around it. The Anderson Ranch Suite is loosely modelled on the structure of a symphony which usually comprises three movements. At its' ends, the powerful pillars of the first and third movements with a quieter, more reflective middle movement suspended between them
