" ‘Lost and Found’ is an exploration of words and the possibilities which present themselves when they are taken off the page and hybridised, codified or reconfigured in other dimensions and forms.
The title of the exhibition comes from the expression often used in association with linguistic translation to account for the shift in essence which occurs when words are translated from one language into another. Despite the fact that it is the act of translation in its wider context which is demonstrated in the exhibition, it still seemed an appropriate title for a group of works which have their genesis in words.
The etymological meaning of translation is ‘to carry over or across’ and in this respect it is common in creative activity where a transfer from one form or condition into another often takes place. In this exhibition, words are removed from their two dimensional field and are hidden in circles, placed in a tree, wrapped around cubic forms, strung together in columns and fragmented. In some of the pieces, the words are no longer visible having been transcribed using a digital binary code. These works also operate in the space between ambiguity and interpretation and the title takes on more importance by offering an indication to the origin of the work.
A variety of texts have been referenced in making the works with the predominant themes being time, measurement and absence. This also finds expression in the forms and while these have a sense of exactness, it is hoped that the words embodied within them are given a more expansive meaning."
